Skimming – explained

Skimming is a method for smoothing walls and ceilings. It uses a thin layer of finishing plaster to cover any rough spots or uneven textures. This technique is popular in new builds and renovations for a sleek finish.

The Skimming Method

Surface Prep: The area is cleaned and any damaged parts are fixed. Big cracks are filled in.

Priming: A primer might be used to help the plaster stick better.

Applying the Skim Coat: A thin, special plaster is spread smoothly over the area with tools. It’s usually only a few millimeters thick.

Smoothing: The plaster is carefully smoothed to get rid of any flaws or bumps.

Drying: The plaster needs to dry, which can take from a few hours to a day, depending on conditions.

Finishing: Once dry, it may be sanded for smoothness. Then, it’s ready for paint or wallpaper.
